In creating my website about PFOS contamination, my motivation stemmed from a strong dislike for the harmful effects it has, especially in the Tennessee River. Seeing the damage it caused, I wanted to bring more attention to this issue.

PFOS, or perfluorooctane sulfonate, is a synthetic chemical compound that belongs to a group of chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, 2018). It is a man-made chemical that was widely used in various industrial and consumer products, including firefighting foams, stain-resistant coatings, non-stick cookware, and water-repellent fabrics (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, 2018).

PFOS has raised significant environmental and health concerns because it is persistent in the environment and can accumulate in the bodies of living organisms, including humans (United States Geological Survey, 2020). Exposure to PFOS has been associated with various health risks, including developmental delays, disruptions in hormone regulation, and chronic conditions such as diabetes (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2020).
